Basic Wine Knowledge

basic wine knowledge

There have been many books written on basic wine knowledge and many theories proposed to answer one seemingly simple question: What makes a wine "good"? Many experts will go into minute detail about esters, clarity, aroma, tannins, and a million other ways to distinguish a fine wine.

If you're a beginner, it might all be a bit overwhelming. If this is you, you probably want to start off simple with a little more basic wine knowledge. First, take a few minutes to learn some wine tasting basics.

Also, if you're new to wine tasting, you should read up on some of the most common types of wine, so you will be able to tell the difference between your Pinot Noirs and your Pinot Grigios. Hint: Some basic wine knowledge is an easy way to impress your date! With a little bit of practice, you will be able to easily recognize the most common varieties of wine.

Maybe you've been to a few wineries and you're starting to get the hang of it. You know a Pinot from a Riesling. Don't get too cocky, there is plenty more to learn.

Before you hit the restaurant for lunch, brush up on the fundamentals of wine and food pairing.

If you go tasting often, you know that it can be hard to remember which wine was which after you've tried a few. A good way to keep track of the wines is to use a wine tasting score card. Just fill out a score card for each wine you taste. At the end of the day, you'll know exactly which wines were your favorite so you can go back and pick up a few bottles to share with your friends!

Many people have spent money on good wine, only to open it and find that it has gone bad. Storing wine can be challenging if you are not aware of the proper environment that wines require.

When stored properly most wines can be stored for years without spoiling. Some types of wine even get better with age. Ever hear the phrase, "aged like a fine wine"? If you would like to store wine for any period of time, make sure you store your wine properly.

Serving wine is as simple as popping the cork and pouring right? Wrong! There is a real technique for serving wine properly, and ignoring the proper steps can negatively affect the flavor and aroma of your wine. Wines should be served at the right temperature, and they must be allowed to breathe.

If you are serving wine at a restaurant, the wine should be presented in the correct manner so that your guests feel that they have a professional server. Believe it or not, there are wine serving manners that should be heeded! Learn how to serve wine properly. And, for the curious wine enthusiast, I have put together a page on wine glass types in case you have ever wondered why wine glasses are all different shapes and if there is any reason for those shapes (there is).

Also, if you drink wine you already know how damaging red wine stains can be. I have done some testing (by necessity) and figured out the best way to remove red wine stains from your carpet and clothing.

I recently partnered up with Cellars Wine Club, allowing me to offer you a bunch of really good deals on their wine clubs.
