Best wine for chili cook-off

by John Hackenburg
(Santa Rosa, CA)

Our casual wine and food group is having a chili cook-off and we all need to bring wines that will work with chili. Normally we would just serve beer, but the assignment is to bring wine. Some of the chili's will be hot, others on the mild side. One will be made from turkey, one with pork and at least one with beef. Any suggestions?

Hi John and Jean, thanks for the question. I'd have to say that a cold beer would be the way to go, but...if you insist on going with wine, it can be pulled off!

Make sure to go with a big bold red (white is out of the question) that can hold its own with the chili, something with some spiciness. My vote would be for a bold California Zinfandel!

Good luck and have fun at the chili cook-off!
